Magnet Recognition®

Salinas Valley Health Medical Center achieved its first Magnet recognition in May 2021 and submitted documentation in June 2025 to pursue re-designation. The American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program® distinguishes healthcare organizations that have demonstrated rigorous standards for nursing and clinical excellence. Approximately 10% of U.S. healthcare organizations have earned this credential, the highest honor for professional nursing practice. Our medical center is the first and only Magnet-recognized healthcare organization on the California Central Coast.

Magnet recognition provides a framework for clinical and nursing excellence, which advances and benefits the entire organization. Excellent clinical and organizational outcomes are achieved by creating an environment that supports interprofessional collaboration, shared decision-making, innovation, and evidence-based practice. For patients, Magnet recognition ensures the highest quality care, delivered by nurses who are encouraged and supported to be the very best that they can be. With each designation, organizations are expected to grow and develop.

Since 2016, key Magnet infrastructure developed at our medical center to support professional growth, autonomy, and clinical excellence to ensure the best outcomes for our patients includes:

• Professional governance structure
• A professional practice model (PPM)
• Data-driven culture to focus on exceptional nurse-sensitive quality measures, patient experience, and nursing satisfaction scores
• Evidence-based practice program to support innovation and clinical inquiry
• Nursing research program that supports clinical nurses to serve as investigators on research studies
• Support for professional growth and development, including BSN or higher education reimbursement, professional board certification courses and bonuses, and mentoring and succession planning
• Nursing peer review and peer feedback
• Reward and recognition including The DAISY Award®, annual organization awards, and unit-level recognition
